There’s a new buzz building in Owensboro.
A group of local citizens has officially launched an exploratory effort to bring professional baseball to Owensboro. Operating as the Owensboro Baseball Committee, the group is taking the first steps toward evaluating what it would take to land a team in the Frontier League, an independent professional league that stretches from Mississippi into Canada.
More Than Just Baseball
The committee believes a professional baseball team could serve as affordable, family-friendly entertainment for the Owensboro community. The bigger picture centers around a mixed-use facility that could host a wide range of events year-round. Think concerts, festivals, 5Ks, church gatherings, nonprofit events, and more.
“This proposal is truly more than bringing professional baseball to the city of Owensboro,” said Kenneth Burns, chair of the Owensboro Baseball Committee. “As with any large mixed-use facility, it creates numerous opportunities for members of the Owensboro and Daviess County community to come together.”
A Regional Rivalry in the Making?
If the project moves forward, there’s already talk of a natural rivalry forming with the Evansville Otters in Indiana, which could add excitement for fans and create a strong regional sports connection.
Focus on Smart Growth
One key piece of the conversation is how the project would be developed. The committee is emphasizing fiscal responsibility, with a focus on minimizing taxpayer impact while still creating something that benefits the entire community. Right now, the group is working closely with city and county leaders to determine if the project makes sense both practically and financially.
What Happens Next?
The effort is still in its early stages, but momentum is building. Community interest and support will play a major role in what comes next. Residents interested in learning more can visit www.owensborobaseball.com.
Why This Matters
Owensboro has always been a city built on community, whether it’s Friday night football or festivals on the riverfront like Friday After 5. The idea of a professional baseball venue builds a lot more onto that identity. If this vision becomes reality, Owensboro might just hear the crack of the bat echoing across town sooner than we think.
