The Spot Coffee and Finery, a local coffee shop (and more recently, a frequent music venue) in Owensboro, KY, has announced two new dances coming up in September. Both dances will offer genres of music that many consider less commonly represented in Owensboro, offering a refreshing change of pace to Owensboro’s music scene. And the best part? They’re both FREE TO ATTEND!
Two very different vibes to check out:
emergencE – An electrifying night of techno, trance, hardcore, and breakbeat, happening on Saturday, September 5th, starting at 6 PM. This event is welcoming both old-school & new-school dancers, inviting everyone over the age of 18 to join in and feel the pounding rhythm!
Blacklight-friendly clothes are highly recommended for this event.
Dark Entries – A mystifying, darkly resonant goth-themed dance full of darkwave, ethereal wave, gothic rock, and more. Dark Entries will take place on Saturday, September 26th, at 6 PM.
Dark Entries comes with a bit of a stricter dress code – they have asked attendees to PLEASE at least make an effort to dress goth (even if that means just wearing all black).
An overarching vision from the hosts
These two dances follow a lengthy string of other dances/live shows hosted by The Spot, each one bringing a different vibe than the last. It started with Goth Prom back in 2024, the first dance hosted by The Spot, which proved to be a hit.

Since then, The Spot has stuck to the goal of hosting at least one event a month. That consistency has been steadily raising interest in Owensboro’s more underground and alternative music scene.
Angel King, manager at The Spot and one of the key organizers behind these shows, shared a bit about the “why” behind the events:
“We started throwing shows in 2024 because we saw a need that wasn’t being met, and we wanted to provide that for our community. We want to give people a space to dance and express themselves with zero judgement – just pure connection to the music and to the people around you.

“We love all kinds of music, but as far as subcultures go, we felt that the goth and rave events would be easier for everyone to access. We don’t want to unnecessarily gatekeep, we want everyone to feel like they can participate.”
There is no shortage of live music in Owensboro. However, many feel that some genres and subcultures are represented much more often than others. If you are looking for something outside of the usual rotation, or maybe want to find a kind of community that you may not encounter as often in Owensboro, these two dances are absolutely for you! (And even if you’re satisfied with Owensboro’s prevalent music scene, they still might be worth checking out!)
The Spot has made it crystal clear that none of their events are exclusive to a certain aesthetic or “genre” of people; no matter how good or bad of a dancer you are, how old of an adult you are, or how many connections you have around town, everyone is welcome to attend emergencE, Dark Entries, and shows beyond.
