🌾 For this week’s Meal in the Field, we spent some time with Jacob Seidehamel and the crew at Lanham Family Farms in Philpot, KY.
The Lanham family has had the farm since the 90s, originally focusing on tobacco and cattle before eventually shifting toward grain farming, trucking, and excavation. Today, they farm around 1,500 acres of row crops, with much of the day-to-day work handled by just two or three people depending on the day.
Jacob has been with the farm since he was 17 years old. He originally started out mowing the lawn, but over the years, he worked his way into farming and eventually became a big part of the operation. Now, he helps keep the farm moving while also taking on the many other responsibilities that come with the job, including trucking and excavation projects.
The farm is currently in a transition from coal mining to full-time farming, making the last few years an exciting and challenging time for the operation. With only three full years of full-time farming under their belt, they’ve already taken on a pretty substantial operation and continue to put in the work to make it happen.
We were grateful for the chance to share a meal with Jacob and the Lanham Family Farms crew and recognize the hard work that goes into keeping an operation like this moving day after day.
