Owensboro, KY – Green River Asset Building Coalition, Inc (GRABC) and it’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites are seeking volunteers to help provide free tax preparation services during the upcoming filing season.
VITA volunteers make a meaningful impact in local communities by helping eligible taxpayers file their tax returns for free. In 2026, GRABC’s VITA sites, also located in Henderson, Meade, Breckinridge, Hancock and Grayson counties, collectively prepared over 4800 tax returns, generating nearly $7.7 million in refunds for Green River area taxpayers.
“Volunteers and community partners provide essential assistance to help taxpayers meet their tax obligations, giving their time, expertise and local support,” says GRABC Board President, Janice Crask. “Our VITA sites’ volunteers help expand access to free, trusted tax preparation services in their communities.”
No experience is necessary to volunteer for the VITA programs. GRABC, in collaboration with the IRS, provides free training for a variety of volunteer roles based on their skills, interests or available time. Volunteers range from students (high school and college) to working professionals to retirees. GRABC VITA volunteers serve qualifying taxpayers including underserved low-income families, seniors, taxpayers with disabilities and residents of rural communities. Volunteer opportunities offer flexible scheduling of days and hours to fit a volunteer’s lifestyle.
How to Get Involved
GRABC will be hosting three volunteer receptions (October 28, November 5, and December 3) where interested individuals may learn more about their tax assistance programs, volunteer roles, and training. One or two current VITA volunteers will also be on hand to share their passion for working with VITA clients. Anyone interested in assisting their local VITA site can contact Carolyn Ferber, 270-685-1603 or carolynferber@grabc.org, for more information.
Green River Asset Building Coalition, Inc. (GRABC) is a non-profit organized to offer the IRS sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) free tax preparation program for low to moderate income households, persons with disabilities, limited English-speaking taxpayers and seniors.
