McLean County High School has found its next leader on the hardwood, hiring Hayden Shelton as the new head coach of the boys basketball program. Shelton will take over for Darren Lynam, who posted a 130-78 record during his tenure, leaving a strong foundation in place.
A graduate of Apollo High School, Shelton is no stranger to the tradition of 3rd Region basketball. He was a key member of Apollo’s 2018 3rd Region championship team, giving him firsthand experience in one of Kentucky’s most competitive regions. Now, he returns home with excitement and a clear vision, eager to put his own stamp on the McLean County program.
Shelton’s playing career included two seasons at Brescia University before transitioning into coaching. He began his coaching career at Georgetown College, then spent time on staff at Rhodes College, a Division III program in Memphis. He later returned to Georgetown, continuing to build his experience at the collegiate level.
Shelton expressed his excitement about the opportunity to lead the Cougars program. “I’m incredibly excited and honored to be the next Head Boys Basketball Coach at McLean County High School. Becoming a head coach has always been a goal of mine, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead, mentor, and build something special with the student-athletes and community here in McLean County! I’m excited to be back in the 3rd Region & can’t wait to get to work, build relationships, and represent the Cougars basketball program with pride, discipline, and passion!”
During his time at the collegiate level, Shelton has been part of sustained success, contributing to a program that compiled a 118–43 record (73%), made four national tournament appearances, and advanced to a Final Four, an Elite Eight, and a Sweet Sixteen. Along the way, he helped develop 16 all-conference players and four professional players, including three playing overseas and one currently competing in the NBA G-League with the Atlanta Hawks.
Despite this being his first head coaching position, Shelton has already earned high praise from respected coaches across multiple levels of the game. Christian Academy of Louisville head coach Tim Riley shared his excitement about the hire, saying, “Congrats to McLean County for hiring Hayden Shelton as their next basketball coach. He is an excellent coach and will do a wonderful job for the Cougars.”
Georgetown College head coach Chris Briggs echoed that sentiment, emphasizing Shelton’s impact beyond basketball. “Hayden Shelton is an outstanding young coach and will be a phenomenal mentor for the young men in the McLean County basketball program. He will bring great energy and enthusiasm to the team, keeping the focus on helping these players be the best they can be on and off the court.”
Adam Howard, an assistant coach at Western Michigan University, pointed to Shelton’s success and reputation across the state. “Hayden Shelton has a golden reputation in the state of Kentucky. Everywhere he’s been, they’ve won. And that will only continue at McLean County High School. Congrats to all involved—this is a hire that will lead to wins and transformative relationships!”
University of Missouri assistant coach Kyle Smithpeters highlighted Shelton’s basketball knowledge and ability to lead. “Hayden brings a lot of energy and knowledge to the game of basketball. McLean County will be in a great position because of him! He knows talent and how to use it.”
Jacksonville State head coach Ray Harper believes Shelton’s leadership qualities make him an ideal fit for the program and community. “McLean County is getting a special leader in Hayden Shelton. His experience at the college level, combined with his passion for building relationships and developing young men makes him the perfect fit for this community. I’m excited to see him build a program centered on pride, character, and winning the right way.”
Shelton now steps into his first head coaching role with strong support behind him and a deep appreciation for the region he calls home. With his energy, experience, and familiarity with the tradition of 3rd Region basketball, he is eager to lead the Cougars and begin building the next chapter of McLean County basketball.
