BRECKINRIDGE COUNTY — Breckinridge County has named a new head basketball coach, and it’s a name that already means something to the program.
Former Tiger and 1995 state champion Bradley Payne will take over the program, returning to the same court where his own high school legacy began. Now, he comes back not as a player, but as a leader focused on shaping the next generation of Tigers.
Payne most recently served as an assistant coach at Daviess County under Coach Neil Hayden, gaining valuable experience in player development and program building. He has also remained a strong voice in the local basketball community as a co-host of Beyond the Bench on 102.7 The Game. But despite his success elsewhere, the pull of home never faded.
“This opportunity,” Payne says, “is about more than wins and losses—it’s about legacy, mentorship, and connection.”
“Coming back to Breckinridge County is a dream come true,” Payne said. “I’m stepping into this role with a great amount of passion to serve these kids and this community. Honoring our tradition while building for the future, and doing it together- representing Breckinridge County’s grit and toughness every time we step on the floor.”
Payne understands what Breckinridge County basketball means because he lived it. He knows the pride of representing the Tigers, the expectations that come with it, and the impact a strong program can have on young athletes. That perspective shapes his vision as he takes over—one centered on developing not just skilled players, but confident and disciplined young men.
His return signals a renewed sense of continuity, linking past success with future potential. For current players, having a coach who once stood in their shoes brings both inspiration and accountability. For the community, it’s a reminder that Breckinridge County’s tradition isn’t just remembered; it’s being passed down.
As Payne takes the reins, the focus is clear: build something lasting, invest in the next generation, and make sure every Tiger who steps onto the court understands the pride that comes with it. In Breckinridge County, the program isn’t just gaining a coach, it’s welcoming one of its own back home.
