In the asphalt racing world, one track is synonymous across the nation with short track racers, Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway. The track opened in 1891 as a horse racing track named Cumberland Park and was home to the Tennessee State Fair in 1906, before being bought by the Davidson County government in 1910. The site has hosted many events through the years including the state fair, legendary wrestling matches, flea markets and now is home to Geodis Park.
The track has been in battles with the city over the last decade in regards to if it still has a place on the property and in the Nashville scene. After a vote of 3-2 with the fair board on Tuesday, it appears the answer is YES. The board passed the proposal for Bristol Motor Speedway to renovate and operate the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway with the goal to attract the NASCAR trucks, Xfinity Series and Cup Series back to one of the series’ original tracks. The proposal now must pass the Metro Council.
