I have a bone to pick with Bring Me The Horizon. When I first got into the hardcore/death metal scene, one of the first bands I ever listened to was Bring Me The Horizon. They were so heavy and Oli Sykes had one of the best screams in the hardcore scene. You just hear their newer single Throne on 97x all the time, now check out their song from 2006 Braille…
Now going from the screaming to top 40 rock angels, to me, is selling out. But singer Oli Sykes doesn’t think that at all saying “We always wanted to be the catchiest, heaviest band. It wasn’t intentional to become an A-list radio band. It was just the music we like. We like pop music. We like catchy songs. But we also like heavy songs. None of it feels forced — none of it feels like we’re selling out. It’s real, and it’s good.”
Yes, they are selling more records. Yes, they finally broke into the top 10 on the Billboard charts and yes, their current album That’s The Spirit has sold more than any of their heavier past albums. But completely abandoning the genre that gained your band popularity and momentum is stupid! Even if it’s just for a song or 2 on the next album, give me your Pray for Plagues sound then the rest of the album can be your generic rock radio music.
