“Promises,” the country-flavored single from Eric Clapton's eighth solo album Backless, reached Number Nine on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Richard Feldman and Roger Linn, the songwriter-musician-producer team who wrote “Promises,” have strong resumes. Feldman has worked with Joe Cocker, Belinda Carlisle, the Spencer Davis Group, and the Pointer Sisters, while Linn was a member of Dwight Twilley's band and also worked with Toto and Del Shannon.
The Backless album found Clapton working with the same producer — Glyn Johns — and the same core of American musicians with whom he had recorded 1977's triple-platinum Slowhand.
Backless reached Number Eight on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum.
