An Owensboro man was arrested late Saturday night after a chase. According to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Department, just before midnight a deputy observed a vehicle traveling north on Highway 431. After observing the vehicle, the dputy attempted a traffic stop on suspicion of a DUI operator. The vehicle failed to stop, and a pursuit resulted. The Kentucky State Police assisted when deputies chased the vehicle to Highway 144. A Trooper blocked the suspect’s lane of travel, and the suspect was forced to stop. Police say he then backed up at a high rate of speed, nearly striking a deputy. The suspect then turned down a dead-end alley, and was forced to stop again. Officers say the suspect then tried to flee on foot, but was quickly apprehended. A search revealed more than two grams of methamphetamine, as well as suspected paraphernalia. The man was identified as 36-year-old Virgil Stewart, and he was arrested on charges of Fleeing and evading, Wanton endangerment, Reckless driving, Trafficking in a controlled substance, DUI, possessing drug paraphernalia, and four warrants. Stewart was lodged in the Daviess County Detention Center.
