British-born singer Robert Palmer's biggest hit ever, “Addicted To Love” was initially considered for the Power Station, a project he did in 1985 with Duran Duran members Andy Taylor and John Taylor and Chic drummer Tony Thompson.
Palmer eventually left the Power Station in a dispute over the nature of the group–he felt it was a one-off, while the others wanted to continue. He did, however, finish his Riptidealbum with Thompson as well as Chic principal Bernard Edwards producing.
Chaka Khan, a longtime friend of Palmer's, contributed a vocal arrangement for “Addicted To Love.”
The song gave Palmer his first million-selling single and reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100. It peaked at Number Five on the U.K. pop chart.
“Addicted To Love” won a Grammy for best male rock vocal performance.
The song's video, directed by Terence Donovan and introducing the mini-skirted, mannequin-like models that would also appear in the video for “I Didn't Mean to Turn You On,” won the best male video award at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1986.
The Riptide album peaked at Number Eight on the Billboard 200 and at Number Five on the U.K. album chart.
