The Apollo Eagles have released their updated 2020 high school football schedule via their twitter account @ApolloEaglesFo1. As with most schools, Apollo had to shuffle some of their past schedule with the KHSAA mandated push back of the start of the 2020 football season to September 11th. Currently Apollo is set to travel for their first 3 games, but Meade County’s new field is still under construction. The Eagles will have a pair of two game home stands starting with Henderson County (9-9) and Marshall County (9-16). Apollo will travel to arch rival Daviess County before returning home for their last two games against Owensboro Catholic (10-30) and Central Hardin (11-6) to close out their regular season schedule.
September 11th: Owensboro (away) This will be a massive season opener in the city as Apollo travels to Rash Stadium to take on OHS. Apollo will figure to have one of the best offensive lines and rushing attacks in western Kentucky and Owensboro will have a young and unproven front seven.
September 18th: Meade County (away) Apollo handled Meade County 49-28 at Eagle Stadium last season. The Green Wave will return star running back Austin Oppal who averaged 124 yards rushing per game. If Meade County’s new field isn’t ready for play, this game could be at Eagle Stadium for the second year in a row.
September 25th: McCracken County (away) This will be a massive test for Apollo, who could be facing their 3rd consecutive road game. The stakes are much higher this time around because this will be the district opener for Apollo. The Eagles will have to find a way to slow down Hunter Bradley, who rushed for 185 yards per game last season. The winner will have the inside track to a district championship.
October 9th: Henderson County (home) Apollo dropped a 20-13 heart breaker on the road to the Colonels last season. Henderson County will have some holes to fill offensively, but the Colonels have a very talented sophomore class. Depending on what happens with the McCracken County game, this could put Apollo squarely in the district drivers seat, or desperately in need of a win.
October 16th: Marshall County (home) Pound for pound, Apollo probably has the toughest first four games of any local team. Having Marshall County at home, should be a very winnable game for Apollo, but the Eagles escaped Draffenville with a 35-28 win last season. Marshall County is much improved and return quarterback Quinn Smith.
October 23rd: Daviess County (away) The Eagles will travel across town to take on their biggest rival in Daviess County. Last season, Apollo was on the verge of blowing Daviess County out, but turnovers and mistakes cost Apollo the chance to win their first game in their new home, as well as picking up a district win. This game could decide on home field advantage in the playoffs.
October 30th: Owensboro Catholic (home) Coach John Edge will take on his former team as Apollo will host Catholic at Eagle Stadium. Edge lost his last two against his former team as Catholic beat South Spencer twice. This time around, Edge will have a team that’s favored as Apollo picked up a big 56-35 win last season.
November 6th: Central Hardin (home) The Bruins were a respectable 9-3 last season, but lose most of their offensive output from last season. This will be a chance for Apollo to avenge last season’s loss to Central Hardin, while having a solid opponent to prepare the Eagles for the post season.
