On May 23rd, 2020 at approximately 01:46am deputies received a call of a suspicious male at the 400 block of Mount Zion road carrying a gas can and asking to come into the caller’s residence. When deputies arrived, the male was no longer on scene. Deputies searched the area and located a white van backed into a driveway just of off Hortons Spur. When the vehicle was illuminated by the deputy’s headlights a male ducked down to avoid being seen by deputies. The driver of the vehicle matched the description of the male seen at the caller’s address.
Deputies then spotlighted the vehicle and the driver of the vehicle took off driving erratically down Hortons Spur road. Deputies noticed the driver did not have on a seatbelt and the vehicle did not have a license plate on the rear. Deputies activated their blue lights and sirens but the male refused to stop and continued down Hortons Spur road until it came to a dead end at a residence at the end of Hortons Spur. Deputies lost contact with the van due to a down tree in the driveway of the residence. Deputies then continued on foot and located the van in the back yard of the residence.
Deputies searched the area but were unable to find the driver of the vehicle and left the scene at approximately 03:27am. At approximately 04:17am deputies received a similar call of a male knocking at the caller’s door very forcefully.
Deputies responded and located Steven Woomer walking down the road near the caller’s address. Woomer was arrested for two unrelated warrants. Upon further investigation deputies determined the van had been stolen from the Centertown mines the same night. At approximately 07:30am deputies received a call of a male walking down the railroad tracks at the end of Mount Zion road which matched the description of the male driving the vehicle. Deputies made contact with Dylan Schroader, he was soaking wet and had scratches and scrapes on his arms and legs. Schroader admitted to deputies he fled in the van because he thought the male that was with him (Steven Woomer) had stolen gas.
Schroader further stated he jumped out of the vehicle, ran down a tree line, and swam across a lake to evade deputies.
