Owensboro High School star baseball player Nick Belcher will continue his baseball career with the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville. Belcher, who was a key member of the Red Devils 2019 3rd region semifinalist team, is excited about suiting up for the Screaming Eagles in the future.
“They have a great education and athletic program, along with a great atmosphere that is close to home.” said Belcher. The Screaming Eagles are a two time NCAA Division II national champion with both championships coming in this decade (2010, 2014). USI is coached by Tracy Archuleta, who is the winningest coach in Screaming Eagles history with 476 victories in 13 seasons.
“After I met coach, everything was simple and perfect. It was exactly what I was looking for.” added Belcher. As a junior for the Red Devil baseball team, Belcher was a stellar catcher when his teammate Isaac Humphrey was pitching. It was Belcher’s work at the plate where he hit a team leading .476 with 41 RBI’s and 2 home runs. As a pitcher, Belcher was equally as dominate, throwing for an outstanding 1.78 ERA with a team leading 59 strikeouts.
“Nick is a talented ball player, that plays with a ton of grit and strength.” said Owensboro High School head baseball coach Logan Johnson. With last years’ success, Belcher is looking to help the Red Devils take the next step going into his senior season. “We’ve come together as a team and family. We have to push past 100 percent.” said Belcher of the team’s off season strength and conditioning program.
“As a team, we always want to win state, but we mainly want to make sure we’re having fun.” added Belcher.
