Basham here, and I want to talk about what Super Bowl weekend really means to me.
Growing up, my family did not really sit down together to watch sports. As far back as I can remember, I was the only one who truly followed a team, or teams. But one thing I do remember clearly is the Super Bowl parties my mom would help me put together.
I was always a 49ers fan growing up because of guys like Jerry Rice, Steve Young, Ricky Watters, and even Deion Sanders, just to name a few. I loved the hype of the Super Bowl, and I could not wait for the newspaper to come out the Friday before the game. It always had a full page breakdown of both teams, the players, and everything about the game itself.
The first one I really remember diving into was when the Washington Redskins played the Buffalo Bills. At the time, I did not even know who Mark Rypien was. But I learned a lot about the game, the players, and the Super Bowl itself just from reading that full page spread. I knew who the Bills were mainly because it felt like they were always in the big game.
Back to the parties.
I have always loved getting people together and enjoying the day with friends, and that did not stop when I got married. My wife is actually an even bigger football fan than I am, which is pretty amazing. We still throw Super Bowl parties, and honestly, most of our friends could care less who is playing. We just love getting together, rooting on teams we barely know anything about, and soaking it all in.
The game, the halftime show, whoever is performing, it all becomes part of it. But at the end of the day, it is really about being together with people you like on a day that feels made for that kind of connection. You do not have to be a fan of the teams or even the game itself. You just have to be a fan of having fun with your circle.
And I almost forgot the commercials. I am old school when it comes to that. I am on the radio for a living, but I love watching commercials, especially during the Super Bowl. That is when the new ones come out, and the heavy hitters usually bring their A game. Pepsi, Doritos, Budweiser, just to name a few.
What I am really trying to say is this. The Super Bowl is great for die hard football fans who followed their team all season, whether their team made it or not. But it is also great for the everyday person who just wants to get together with friends, eat some good finger food, and collectively try to figure out what a false start is.
So make a plan. Have a good time. Enjoy the togetherness, and most of all, make some memories.
