You, by now, have probably seen the upcoming weather forecast for Owensboro. Any psychic can read the first two things that come to almost everyone’s mind when weather calls for snow: MILK AND BREAD! Suddenly, those two items feel essential, and grocery store shelves empty faster than the forecasted weather arrives. It’s hardly explained, but I think of it as evolutionary. The second we see snow mentioned, something I can only explain as part of a Midwesterner’s evolution kicks in. An instinct similar to sea turtles knowing where to go when they hatch without ever being told, we know exactly where we are supposed to go before snow: The Grocery Store for MILK and BREAD.
It could come from the same instincts that once had families keeping pantries stocked during the Cold War, but on a much smaller scale and a different “cold war“. It could be that it was “bread” into us due to the weather our parents experienced and their parents before them and how they prepared. The good news though is that there’s actually a bit of logic behind it. Milk checks a lot of nutritional boxes quickly with protein, fat, and carbs, while bread delivers fast energy and works with just about anything. You really have to “milk” everything you can out of what you have in situations of bad weather. I think I hit enough bad puns there. ANYWAYS…
That evolutionary instinct is kicking in again here in Owensboro as we head into the weekend, with colder temperatures and the potential for wintry weather in the forecast. When the weather feels uncertain, people naturally prepare in ways that feel practical and reassuring. So if you notice milk and bread disappearing from shelves, it is not panic. It is preparation. Stay safe, warm, and keep an eye on the forecast. See below, the most recent update from our friends over at The National Weather Service out of Paducah, Kentucky.
