I consider myself someone who usually stays pretty dialed in to what is happening around Kentucky, especially when it comes to things most drivers would notice. That is why I was genuinely surprised to learn that Kentucky released seven new specialty license plate designs back in October, and somehow, they flew completely under my radar. Having a December birthday, this is around the time I find myself renewing my tags, perhaps a little late.
Had I known at the time, I can say without hesitation that I would already be driving around with the black “Nature’s Finest” license plate on my vehicle.
Seven New Kentucky Specialty License Plates You May Have Missed
According to a news release from the state, Kentucky drivers were given seven new specialty plate options beginning October 10, 2025. Each plate costs $44 annually, with $10 from each registration going toward a specific cause or organization tied to the design.
Here is a breakdown of the plates that became available:
Suicide Prevention License Plate
This white plate with powder blue accents features the suicide prevention number 988 and the message “You Matter!” A portion of the fee supports the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline Fund, helping promote mental health awareness and access across Kentucky. This is the second mental health focused plate released in the state within the last year.

Blackout “Nature’s Finest” License Plate
This is the one that got away for me.
The Blackout plate, part of the Nature’s Finest series, features a clean black background with Kentucky’s shape subtly ghosted in gray beneath the plate number. It is simple, bold, and easily one of the best looking plates the state has released in years. Funds go toward the Kentucky Heritage Land Conservation Fund.
If I had known this plate existed back in October, it would already be on my car.

Kentucky Beekeepers License Plate
This black plate features a honeybee and the message “Protect Kentucky Bees.” Proceeds support the Kentucky State Beekeeper Association and promote pollinator conservation across the state.

Beautify the Bluegrass License Plate
With a striking gradient from deep blue to white, this plate features horse silhouettes and an American flag. Funds support Operation PRIDE, a civic organization focused on beautification efforts in Bowling Green and Warren County.

Why You Might Not Have Seen These Plates Either
One reason these new Kentucky license plates slipped past me is simple volume. Kentucky now offers around 160 specialty plate designs, and most county clerk offices do not keep every option in stock. Many plates are only available by request, which means unless you are actively looking or see one in the wild, it is easy to miss new releases entirely.
How to View and Order Kentucky License Plates
All available Kentucky license plate designs can be viewed online through the state’s official portal at Drive.ky.gov. Personalization is available for an additional $25, and plates can be ordered even if your local county clerk does not have them on hand.
Final Thought
I cannot help but feel like I missed the memo. Kentucky quietly rolled out seven new license plate designs last fall, and the black Kentucky’s Finest plate is easily one of the best looking options the state has ever offered.
If you are due for a renewal or just want something that better matches your style or supports a cause you care about, it may be worth taking another look. I know I will be next time.
