Of all the tracks on the NASCAR circuit, one of the most historic is the famed Darlington Raceway in Darlington, SC.
The track known as “The Lady in Black” has been known to be tough on rookies, and younger drivers in its over 70-year history.
Joe Gibbs Racing’s Ty Gibbs is hoping to make good with the “lady” in this weekend’s Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.
Gibbs has four Cup Series starts at the South Carolina track, and scored a career best finish of 2nd at the spring race earlier this year. In the NASCAR Xfinity series Gibbs has a best finish of sixth in three starts.
Gibbs heads into the weekend with eleven top-10 and seven top-5 finishes in his 2024 campaign and currently sets 39 points above the series cut off heading into the final race of the regular season.
Ty Gibbs hopes to use the wisdom of his veteran crew chief, Chris Gayle who has been atop the pit box for some of the biggest names in the sport including Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Erik Jones, Elliott Sadler and Christopher Bell.
“The Southern 500 has a lot of tradition and this is an important race for us as it’s the final one before the playoffs. We finished second there in spring and we can lock ourselves in with a win. We’ll do our best and I know we’ll have a good Monster Energy Toyota Camry XSE,” said Gibbs.
