EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – The Winter Weather Advisory for western Kentucky will end at 6:00 p.m. Please expect slick spots during your travels on MLK Day.
Arctic air will remain the primary concern on MLK Day through Wednesday morning. Low temperatures will sink into the single digits again this morning, with wind chills dropping below zero during the overnight and predawn hours. High temperatures will be in the mid teens Monday and Tuesday with daytime wind chills in the single digits. Today, becoming mostly cloudy with scattered light snow showers.
Wednesday, we finally start to warm back up with sunny skies and highs in the upper 20s to low 30s.
Thursday, high temps finally ascend above freezing in the the mid 30s. A weak cold front will punch through Thursday night, bringing us another chance light snow through Friday. There is the snow potential of a dusting and or light snow accumulations.

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM CST MONDAY... * WHAT...Snow. Total snow accumulations of around 1 inch. * WHERE...Union KY, Henderson, and Daviess Counties. * WHEN...Through 6 PM CST Monday. * IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact morning and evening commutes. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The advisory has been expanded northward to encompass the Henderson and Owensboro areas based on current radar trends and observations. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Slow down and use caution while traveling. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.

UPDATE: According to the Daviess County Emergency Management Agency:
On White Flag nights ONLY – Homeless or unhoused with pets
o A volunteer has offered to house pets for homeless/unhoused residents seeking shelter during White Flag nights
o Pets will be kept in a cage with blankets on the floor
o Cages are in an insulated garage with the heat set at 60 degrees
o Evening meal and water supplied
o Hours are 8PM to 5AM
o Pick up (8PM) of pet will be at CrossRoads, St Benedict’s, or Pitino shelter
o Return delivery (5:00 AM) of pet will be back to point of pick up
o If owner is not there to pick up pet, it will be taken to Daviess County Animal Care and Control
o Please call or stop by CrossRoads (270) 240-2773, St Benedict’s (270) 541-1003 , or Daniel Pitino shelter (270) 688-9000 to coordinate pet pick up
According to National Weather Service (Paducah), White Flag criteria (32°F or below air temperature or wind chill) will be met tonight through at least Monday night (January 12-15, 2024). With the bitter arctic blast moving in this weekend, it is likely White Flag will last through all of next week. We will review and send necessary White Flag extensions next Tuesday morning.
A White Flag event signals the opening of an overnight emergency shelter that will be open to all men, women, and children.
Hours of Operation: 6:00 P.M. – 7:00 A.M, unless beds are available at another shelter.
Location: Daniel Pitino Shelter, 501 Walnut Street, Owensboro, KY 42301
Meals: Available at Daniel Pitino Shelter during normal meal hours.
Transportation Options: Monday-Friday: on WHITE FLAG nights, Owensboro Transit System will provide free bus transportation to Daniel Pitino shelter between the hours of 4-6 pm. **Inform the bus driver you are going to the White Flag shelter. ** Saturday and Sunday: Contact Daniel Pitino Shelter at 270-688-9000 if transportation is necessary.
Self Transportation: Those seeking shelter on White Flag nights may transport themselves to Daniel Pitino Shelter between 6:00 P.M. and 7:00 A.M.
