The stars and cars of the NASCAR Cup Series made the trip to “The Lady in Black” for Throwback weekend at Darlington Raceway. The starting line up was filled with paint schemes from days gone by as NASCAR paid tribute to 75 years and the sport’s 75 greatest drivers.
Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron took home the win, his 3rd of the season, and 7th of his career. Byron was able to capitalize on contact between Ross Chastain and Kyle Larson on a late race restart to claim the win in his throwback Jeff Gordon schemed #24 Chevrolet.
“I’m just thankful I was able to get in this 24 car. I was too young at the time, I feel like but growing up, maturing and having a great team around me. Being able to build the core around me with a great group of guys. Everyone on the team does a great job preparing cars and we work hard at it. It’s nice to see it go our way once,” said Byron after the race.
Byron was emotional in victory lane and dedicated this win to his grandfather, who he lost earlier this week.
Kevin Harvick finished in 2nd followed by Chase Elliott, Brad Keselowski, Bubba Wallace, Harrison Burton, Kyle Busch, Justin Haley, Ryan Blaney and Chris Buescher.
The NASCAR Cup Series heads to North Wilkesboro for the first time in 27 years for next weekend’s All-Star event.
