Speed cameras could be on the way for Kentucky work zones under a bill moving through the House. The legislation authored by Rep. John Blanton would create a pilot project to install speed cameras in work zones. Blanton told the House Transportation Committee the Jared Lee Helton Act, named for a man killed in a 2019 worksite accident, would direct the Transportation Cabinet to oversee the project and mail out the $75 citations for drivers clocked 10 MPH over the posted work zone limit. Drivers would not be cited during hours that workers are not present and there is an appeals process for those who dispute their citation. The pilot would start in January of 2024 and run through the end of 2025.
