The first ASAP alarm was received during implementation from TYCO/Johnson Control for an actual , Smoke Detected, event where the ASAP alarm was received 40 seconds before a 911 facility call was placed from the impacted facility. The Automated Secure Alarm Protocol (“ASAP”), launched in 2011 as a public-private partnership, is designed to increase the efficiency and reliability of emergency electronic signals from monitoring companies to PSAPs. The following agencies were involved in the initial launch of ASAP:
• Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO)
• The Monitoring Association (TMA).
• American National Standards Institute (ANSI) – cooperatively developed protocols used for ASAP.
• International Justice and Public Safety Network (NLETS) – critical life safety signals network
The use of ASAP results in the following benefits for monitored alarm users and first responders:
• Fewer phone calls to the PSAP — Alarm monitoring center data is passed directly to PSAPs electronically within seconds and then provided to first responders upon dispatch.
• Quicker processing times — Data does not have to be input manually or communicated verbally, resulting in reduced hold times and faster responses. The process, on average, takes about five seconds.
• Information transmitted with greater accuracy — Electronic transmission of data reduces the chances of errors.
For a current list of agencies and alarm companies using ASAP and those in the implementation process, visit The Monitoring Association at https://tma.us/asap/. Owensboro Daviess County Central Dispatch encourages all who have contracts with an alarm monitoring company to inquire about their awareness of or interest in implementing the ASAP program. ASAP participation increases the efficiency and reliability of your alarm activation transmission.
