Elton John wrote the music for “Your Song” in 20 minutes on October 27, 1969. Bernie Taupin, who was 17 at the time, wrote the words during breakfast.
“Your Song” was John's first single to chart, spending 11 weeks in the Billboard top 40 beginning December 19, 1970 and peaking at Number Eight.
It was the second single from his debut album and was originally the flipside of “Take Me To The Pilot.”
After hearing “Your Song,” John Lennon called John “the first new thing that's happened since we (the Beatles) happened.”
The song “We All Fall In Love Sometimes” on Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy refers to John and Taupin writing “Your Song.”
A verse from “Your Song” was used in a Rimmel Cosmetics commercial.
The song was also used in the movie Welcome Home.
