Cycling returns to Owensboro after a yearlong hiatus with the Bluegrass Century, previously known as the Bourbon and Bluegrass Century. This year’s event will bring a cycling event back to the community and proceeds will benefit Young Life of Owensboro.
The Bluegrass Century will be held Saturday, September 25 and will offer three different routes for riders of all ages and experience. Riders under 18 must be accompanied by an adult and must sign a minor registration form.
The event will offer a century route (100 miles), a metric century (62 miles) and a 30 mile route. All riders will roll out with an 8 a.m. CT start and riders will be welcomed with fully stocked rest stops along the route no matter which distance a rider chooses.
Registration opened July 1 and participants can sign up online here!
Registration is $55 through August 22 and increases to $75 up until the day of the ride.
Participants will only be able to register in person after September 20. Walk-up registration will be available on Friday evening and Saturday morning the weekend of the ride.
Those who register before August 22 will be guaranteed a t-shirt and swag bag.
“We are so excited to be able to revive this ride that had become a staple for cycling in Western Kentucky for several years,” said Keith Johnson, one of the organizers of the Bluegrass Century. “We are looking forward to gathering cyclists from all over the state and region in Owensboro for this event as another way to boost the economy as we emerge from the COVID pandemic.”
The ride will start and end at Crosspointe Baptist Church located at 550 Worthington Road in Owensboro. Parking will be available on site. Participants can expect an experience filled with safe, scenic routes on low traffic roads, fully stocked rest stops with food and hydration, and a start/finish line with food and merchandise vendors before and after the ride.
As details come together, those interested in the ride can find more information as it becomes available to the Bluegrass Century Facebook page.
Potential participants can also reach out to bluegrasscenturyobky@gmail.com if they have specific questions.
This year’s ride will benefit Young Life of Owensboro. The Young Life Foundation is a nonprofit organization that started in Owensboro in 2011 and focuses on building mentoring relationships with middle and high school students in the local community. For more information, click here!
