Summer Fun Right in Your Backyard!

Owensboro, KY, United States / Owensboro Radio

If your family is anything like mine, COVID changed up the routine in our family. We went from having plans every weekend and every hour of the day to a stand still. At first if your kids were like mine, there was complaining about not seeing friends and whining that there was nothing to do. But then we all fell into an amazing routine.

We played board games, grilled, came up with new recipes to cook together, went on walks, the list goes on and on. As things are opening back up slowly, we are trying to keep our “new normal” in tact. It’s not that we want to live like hermits but we learned a lot about ourselves and our kids. We learned that it’s the little things that keep us close. Eating together as a family or sitting down to ask about each person’s day and really listening with no distractions.

I have been on a mission to come up with some fun summer day trips, that are close to home, inexpensive, and support local businesses.  Here are the top 3 that I have found so far.

Windy Hollow Campground and Beach

Windy Hollow Campground is not your typical campground. This beautiful place has a swim beach, hiking trails, camping, bait shop, and SO much more. If you are looking for a family outing, company retreat, or family reunion this is the place to be. Did you know you can rent out their beach for a private outing?

  • 3 miles off Highway 81

Ben Hawes State Park

Ben Hawes Park is a 297.7 acre park that offers so much to any family. From golf, to hiking, to biking, family reunions, walking dogs, to reading a book it’s perfect for anyone.

Yellow Creek Park

Yellow Creek Park is located in Thruston and is a 152 acre park. It features a disc golf course, hiking/walking trails, playgrounds, a 7 acre stocked lake, and SO much more!

My favorite part about Yellow Creek is they host a bluegrass music festival called ROMP each year. For details you can go to http://www.rompfest.com

Yellow Creek is the perfect place for picnics and planning an entire day with the family. Plus there is a great little pizza place called JJ’s Pizza right before you turn into the park!
