The Owensboro Red Devils Kenyatta Carbon made a steal in the final seconds of overtime in the Aleris Rolled product game of the week. Carbon then hit two clutch free throws, and OHS held off an undermanned Catholic team to get an important district win in overtime Friday night at the Sportscenter. The win pushes OHS to a 3-0 9th district record, Catholic falls to 2-1 in district play with the Aces and Red Devils being the clear favorites to be the #1 and #2 seeds respectively.
Catholic was playing without the services of sophomore star point guard Brian Griffith who is currently averaging 17.4 PPG. Griffith’s injury is reported to be minor, and the Aces expect him back for their Tuesday road game against Whitesville Trinity. Drew Hartz was on fire, hitting 4 three pointers and finishing with 17 points. Ji Webb played the entire game for the Aces and used his length and shot blocking ability to keep OHS from penetrating the Aces zone. Webb also had thunderous dunks to finish the game with 16 points.
OHS used a balanced attack to stay undefeated in district play. Amari Wales (13), Gavin Wimsatt (11), Tucker Hagan (9), and Kenyatta Carbon (9) led the way for OHS offensively. Wimsatt fought his through lots of contact to get back on track in the post, and also had several rebounds and blocks. Wales is starting to show flashes of the slashing, attacking point guard play that was expected this season. Wales tied the game up in overtime with his drive to the basket through contact, which set up Carbon’s steal and game winning free throws.
