Another year, another milestone set by coach Greg Brown and the Owensboro Middle School Football program. The 7th grade Red Devil football team capped off an unexpected run to the Southwest Kentucky Football tournament championship this past weekend by defeating Christian County Middle School 34-14 at Warren Central High School.
The irony behind the victory over Christian County is, these same two teams were scheduled to play each other the first game of the season, but the game was cancelled. Another setback occurred during the first game of the season against Bowling Green, as Ethan Gough (Austin Gough’s brother) broke his tibia and fibia and was lost for the season.
“From there on, we had some kids step up.” said head football coach Greg Brown. After a solid regular season that saw OMS lose two games (Bowling Green and College View), the Devils regrouped for the tournament. “I think we saw our mistakes on film, and we could say that we lost because of those mistakes.” added Brown.
OMS defeated a tough Drake’s Creek Middle School (Greenwood’s Middle School) in the first round of the playoffs, and then had to take on Bowling Green Moss (Warren Central’s Middle School) who defeated the Bowling Green Purples in the first round. OMS got a massive win over Moss at Owensboro Middle School in round two with a last second touchdown run by QB Trevor Delacey. “Our guys did a very good job of running the football against Moss.” said Brown.
That win propelled the Devils to the championship game to take on Christian County at Warren Central High School. After a nip and tuck first quarter, the Devils extended their lead to 20-0 by halftime against the Colonels. After building a 34-0 lead the Devils, won by a final of 34-14. “We made sure to get everyone some playing time in the championship game. Christian County has some great athletes, as we do, but I’m extremely proud of our effort against a very good team.”
