Missing the playoffs for the first time in six years has apparently
cost Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell his job. ESPN
reports that Seattle has fired Bevell, who spent seven seasons
directing a unit that slumped to a disappointing 15th in total
offense in 2017 and failed to total 150 yards in both Weeks 15 and
16. One potential candidate to replace Bevell is Falcons offensive
coordinator Steve Sarkisian, who worked with coach Pete Carroll at
USC.
The Packers have picked a new defensive coordinator, and just like
the departed Dom Capers, he’s a former head coach. Mike Pettine,
who coached the Browns in 2014 and 2015, will run Green Bay’s
defense and will replace Capers, whom Mike McCarthy fired after the
unit ranked in the bottom third of the NFL for the fourth time in
seven seasons. Pettine previously served as the defensive
coordinator for both the Bills and Jets, and runs a similar 3-4
system to the one the Packers used under Capers.
Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has returned to practice after
leaving the team Tuesday to deal with an undisclosed personal
matter. Coach Dan Quinn insisted that there were “no setbacks for
him or us” as a result of Ryan’s absence because he was able to
attend the team meeting and discussion of the game plan ahead of
Saturday’s NFC divisional playoff game at Philadelphia. He also
insisted it was not injury related.

One day after Texas coach Shaka Smart said Andrew Jones was dealing
with an undisclosed illness and would provide no further details
out of respect to his family, the school announced the star guard
has been diagnosed with leukemia and has started treatment. Jones,
who returned for his sophomore season instead of entering the
draft, was averaging a team-high 15.3 points before breaking his
wrist in early December. Upon his return late last month, he played
sparingly after complaining of low energy and was sent for tests.

Serena Williams has revealed that she had a health scare right
after the birth of her daughter in September. The tennis superstar
told the magazine Vogue she developed several small blood clots in
her lungs while in the hospital and ”spent the first six weeks of
motherhood unable to get out of bed.” Williams has not competed
since winning her 23rd Grand Slam singles in last January’s
Australian Open. She will not compete in this year’s tournament,
which begins next week.
MLB=
Gerrit Cole appeared to be headed to the World Series champion
Astros – until he wasn’t. MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported that
the Pirates had reached a deal to send their ace to Houston for
prospects, but an hour or so later the deal was off according to
Yahoo’s Jeff Passan. Pittsburgh has been rumored to be shopping
Cole, who’s under contract through 2019, throughout the offseason,
with the Yankees also reportedly interested in acquiring the
right-hander.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL=
Top-ranked wide receiver Calvin Ridley is headed to the NFL draft,
and he’s not the only Alabama player who’s moving on. Junior
defensive tackle Da’Ron Payne, an All-SEC selection who was the
defensive MVP of both the national championship and semifinal
games, and backup running back Bo Scarbrough are also turning pro.
Ridley, who caught 63 passes for 967 yards and five TDs as a
junior, is expected to be the first wide receiver taken in the
upcoming draft. Payne is expected to join Ridley in the first round
after proving to be unblockable against Clemson and Georgia in the
playoff.
NBA=
According to reports, the Bulls and Jazz are discussing a trade
involving forward Nikola Mirotic. Derrick Favors, who will be an
unrestricted free agent in July, is said to be a possible trade
piece going from Utah to Chicago, though the Bulls are reportedly
looking to receive a first-round draft pick. Mirotic, averaging a
career-high 17.4 points, can’t be traded until Monday as a result
of when he was signed in the offseason and can veto any deal. The
Pistons and Trail Blazers are also interested in the fourth-year
forward.
