Workers at Century Aluminum’s plant in Hawesville were notified Tuesday that the plant will temporarily be closing. According to media partner 14News, the employees received a WARN notice, which stands for Worker Adjustment and Re-training Notification, which gives 60 days warning. Century officials say the closure was driven by the recent collapse in aluminum price brought on by Chinese overcapacity and the improper export of heavily-subsidized Chinese aluminum products. Although they do expect the closure to be temporary, all workers will be laid off between October 24 and October 31. Union officials say 29 were laid off last week, with another 20 coming next week. The Hawesville plant employs around 565 people.
